News & Policy News & Blog Campaign for Learning awarded EEF funding to evaluate Family Skills We are delighted to announce that the Campaign for Learning is part of an exciting new project which will test the impact of a family literacy programme. This programme is funded by the Education Endownment Foundation with Unbound Philanthropy and the Bell Foundation, as part of a £2m funding round focused on raising the attainment of EAL pupils. The Campaign for Learning and Learning Unlimited will coordinate the programme working in partnership with the Family Learning Local Authority Group (FLLAG). This programme will test the impact of a family literacy programme. The Family SKILLS programme will focus on parental engagement to improve the literacy skills of reception class pupils with EAL and their parents. Parents will be helped to develop their own literacy and language skills so they feel more confident about supporting their child’s learning at home. It will combine discrete ‘parents only’ sessions, and sessions with parents and children learning together. The sessions will include an introduction to education in England and the culture of schools, reading strategies, home literacy practices, oral traditions (including storytelling, songs and rhymes), phonics, learning through play, and a focus on how to make the most of bilingualism. Juliette Collier, the Campaign's National Director explained, "The funding of the Family Skills programme provides us with a significant opportunity to undertook a large scale evaluation of the impact of family literacy programmes. These approaches are well-established and are delivered by teams in local authorities to around 50,000 families a year. A study by the Institute of Education has shown that family literacy programmes can have a positive efect on children's reading scores, equivalent to around two month's additional progress. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Learning Unlimited and the Family Learning Local Authority Group to deliver this important programme."
