Trustee: Colleen Amos Expand Colleen is a communications specialist and consultant in personal growth and communications development. Colleen was until recently Head of Communications and Marketing for The Learning Trust, the not for profit organisation which was set by the government to run education services for the London Borough of Hackney. She now runs the Amos Bursary, which supports British young men of African and Caribbean heritage to raise their aspirations, access Higher Education and obtain work experience. Colleen brings her valuable knowledge of the learning sector to the board. She uses her experience to give advice on strategy for the campaign and to help with policymaking decisions. Her understanding of fundraising issues is also of great benefit to the Campaign.
Team: Juliette Collier, National Director Expand Juliette is one of our National Directors at the Campaign. As well as co-directing the Campaign with Julia, she leads on our family and community learning activities and parental engagement work in schools. Juliette is a powerful and passionate advocate for the use of family learning approaches in developing motivation and confidence for learning for people of all ages, and for the importance of family learning in developing different and complimentary skills and knowledge to formal education. Juliette co-ordinates our large scale research projects which aim to show the impact of family learning and parental engagement on a range of outcomes for both children and adults.
Team: Julia Wright, National Director Expand Julia is one of our National Directors. As well as co-directing the Campaign with Juliette, she leads on our policy activities and our work with employers and workplaces. Julia co-ordinates the Campaign's policy seminar and events programme and is responsible for commissioning and publishing our policy reports. Julia is passionate about using creative and collaborative approaches to building learning cultures at work and engaging people in learning. She leads on the Campaign's Learning at Work Week.
Team: Gurpreet Keila, National Development Manager Expand Gurpreet is our national development manager. Gurpreet supports our national campaigns and programmes and leads on the Family Learning Festival and develops new work and partnerships.
Team: Tricia Hartley, Lead Consultant Expand Tricia is one of the Campaign's lead consultants. Tricia was CEO of the Campaign until January 2015. Since she retired from this full time role, she chairs our policy seminar programme, which brings together learning sector professionals to discuss government policy with civil servants and sector leaders.
Trustee: Kim Worts Expand A linguist by background, Kim has worked in communications for several Government Departments since 2007. She previously worked in research for Action Planning and later for the Central Office of Information. She was Director of Communications at the former Department for Innovation, Universities and skills (now part of the Department for Education) and Head of Corporate Communications at the Department for Energy and Climate Change. Kim was also Head of Communications at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Before she retired, Kim was the Director of External Affairs at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors until 2016. Kim brings skills in strategic communications and marketing, management of national communication campaigns, partnership and stakeholder management, budget management and business planning to the Board.
Trustee: Stuart Mallett Expand Stuart is an experienced financial and business analyst who joined the Campaign’s Board in 2013. He spent 9 years as Performance and Finance Manager at the Department of Health before moving to become Business Architect in its Widening Participation in Learning Unit, producing the Unit’s first three Business Plans and securing a £1.5m annual budget from the Department. He followed this with a similar role at Skills for Health. Since becoming self- employed, Stuart has worked for the National Open College Network, the Careers Advisory Council and several NHS Trusts, leading on business and financial planning. He brings strong financial, business, systems and commercial expertise to the Board.
Trustee: Bob Fryer Expand Professor R.H. (Bob) Fryer CBE was one of the Campaign for Learning’s founding Trustees. He rejoined the board in 2008 and is currently its chair. Until 2008, Bob was the Chief Learning Advisor to the Department of Health. Prior to that, he was National Director for Widening Participation in Learning in the Department of Health responsible for devising, leading and supporting the implementation of a strategy to open up access to learning and employment in the NHS. He was the founding Chief Executive of NHSU from February 2002 to February 2005 providing learning opportunities and support to 100,000 NHS staff in its first year. Bob was Assistant Vice Chancellor at the University of Southampton and Director of New College. He was Principal of the Northern College for Residential Adult Education for 15 years. Between 1999 and 2001 he was on secondment to Ufi Ltd as an Executive Director and Board member. Bob was a founder member of the national Learning & Skills Council. He chaired the government’s National Advisory Group for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning. He was a member of the ‘Moser’ Committee on Adult Basic Skills and of the Policy Action Team on Skills for Neighbourhood Renewal. Bob is a former Chair of the Board of Careers England. He was awarded a CBE for services to Community Education in the 1999 New Years Honours.
Trustee: Jim Houghton Expand Jim worked with the Campaign for many years as CEO of Network Press, who published our Learning to Learn books. After Network Press was bought out by Continuum Books, Jim moved on to run Critical Skills Ltd, a training organisation. Jim also served on our Learning to Learn Steering Group, and has extensive knowledge about this area of work and how schools run. Jim is now retired but is extensively involved in voluntary work in the East Midlands, where he is based. He and Sue, his wife, were awarded the BBC Sports Personality Unsung Heroes award for 2013 for their work in sports development in Desford.
Trustee: Judith Swift Expand Judith works for the United Road Transport Union. She was previously the Union Development Manager for unionlearn, the learning arm of the Trades Union Congress where she took the lead role for supporting unions in developing their learning and skills capacity. This included overall management of the Union Learning Fund and the learndirect union learning centres, as well as supporting union learning representatives. Before working for unionlearn, Judith worked nationally for TUC Learning Services as a TUC tutor in the North West, delivering courses for union representatives and health and safety representatives. Her wider background in FE includes teaching English and German primarily. Judith was awarded the MBE in 2005 for her Trade Union work.
Trustee: Deian Hopkin Expand Professor Sir Deian Hopkin is an academic and former Vice Chancellor. He is an historian, originally from Wales and a fluent Welsh speaker. Since 2012, he has served as Expert Adviser to the First Minister of Wales for the Centenary of the First World War. Deian was President of the National Library of Wales until 2016 and was previously Vice Chancellor of London South Bank University. He has been actively involved in educational policy and, in particular, the skills agenda of the UK over a number of years. He has extensive broadcasting experience and was a member of the BBC General Advisory Council. Deian is a commentator on politics and contributes to election coverage broadcast in Wales. Deian is extensively involved in the charitable sector, particularly in the area of support for refugees and asylum seekers. He is Vice Chairman of the Council for Assisting Refugee Academics, and was until 2009 Chairman of the UNIAID Foundation, the national charity supporting students in financial difficulty, which has since merged with the Brightside Trust. He was knighted in the 2009 Birthday Honours.
Trustee: Janet Mokades Expand Janet is a former HMI and Ofsted Inspector now working as an independent consultant. She has experience of working with both local and national Government in education, child protection and policy development. In her HMI role she was Lead Inspector on a number of LEA-wide Inspections as well as inspections of individual institutions. In her previous roles, she has led the independent School Improvement Board for Pimlico School, which was undertaking a new build under the Government’s Building Schools for the Future investment programme and has acted as the independent chair of Coventry Safeguarding Children Board. Janet’s specialism is equality & diversity and community cohesion.
