Discover a new way of reaching families
Family Learning Week - in a class of its own!

As a school are you looking to find more effective ways to:

  • reach parents who don't always attend school events?

National Family Learning Week, 6 to 14 October 2007, could be the platform you're looking for. Join the thousands of community venues, including hundreds of other schools, colleges and learning providers, set to host fun, informal and family-friendly events as part of the biggest celebration of family learning in the country.

Family Learning Week offers participating schools the chance to link their event and organisation with a high profile campaign to create a big learning splash locally on the national family learning stage. Last year, Halcon Primary School in Taunton ran a bread making workshop for families during the Week. Teachers incorporated numeracy and literacy into this fun event and used it as a springboard to get parents and children to sign up for other longer-term courses and activities. The focus on fun learning helps to attract even the most reluctant learners and parents to attend and try something new providing schools with the perfect opportunity to signpost them to other school events, resources and activities, that can help improve the learning and skills of parents and children alike. Bringing families into the school environment to learn together can help improve relationships and communication between parents and schools giving parents more confidence to help their children learn in school. One school has reported a 50% increase of parents that don't normally come to school activities, attending parents' evening after taking part in a Family Learning Week event.

The overall theme of Family Learning Week is Discovery but the campaign gives schools the freedom to organise their own activities to suit their own recourses and objectives as well as the needs and interests of the families themselves and have the advantage of telephone support from the Campaign for Learning if they require further advice. Planning materials, promotional merchandise, specialists resources, including a Planning Guide for Schools, and advice and guidance are all available online at www.familylearningweek.com to help participating organisations every step of the way to make their event as enjoyable and successful as possible.

With the Campaign's help you could be supporting local families to discover a healthy lifestyle, discover skills for life, discover digital technology or simply discover the fun of learning together. And as an organisation you could discover new ways to reach and communicate with parents, build links with the community and help families learn.
