Understanding the supply and training of teachers in the school sector

This event will provide delegates with an understanding of the supply and training of teachers in the school sector. Professor John Howson, Managing Director of Education Data Surveys and leading authority on the workings of the labour market for teachers will deliver this session.

Session One
This session will focus on the relationship between the modelling process conducted by the DfE and the factors affecting the supply and demand for teachers at the macro level. Issues covered will include:

- the importance of career changers
- the effect of the Pupil Premium
labour mobility
- the relative importance of different variables.

Session Two 
We will explore the current landscape and possible future changes to the way teachers are prepared for the profession. It will include:

- analysis of the importance of different routes into teaching
- possible changes and their effects
- how any recovery in the economy is likely to affect numbers wanting to train as teachers
- what happened when tuition fees were first introduced in the 1990s.

Session Three
This session will look at the most recent available evidence for the working of the labour market for teachers in England. It will identify key trends and consider the effect that policy changes such as the Pupil Premium and development of Academies are likely to have on the labour market.

Session Four
The labour market for head teachers is especially important as head's play a pivotal role in the leadership of schools. This session will identify key trends in the market and consider possible future directions.

Professor John Howson is a leading authority on the workings of the labour market for teachers having studies aspects of the market for more than a quarter of a century. After ten years in senior posts at Oxford Brookes University he became a government advisor on teacher supply for a year before establishing Education Data surveys in 1997. He sold the business to TSL, the publishers of the TES and THE in 2008. After retiring from TSL in may 2011, he established dataforeducation.info and is concentrating on work on the labour market in education. Professor Howson is a prolific writer having produced more than 500 columns for the TES during the past decade as well as for numerous other publications. He holds visiting posts at both universities in Oxford as well as a visiting professorship at the London Institute of Education.
