Schools urged to join campaign to help

Schools across the UK are being urged to get involved in a national campaign to help children improve their handwriting skills.

my child, the education resource for parents of 3 to 13 year olds, is encouraging schools to participate in Write a Letter Week 2008 which takes place from 22 to 28 February 2008.

However schools are being invited to get involved from now by organising handwriting activities and events around the theme of the campaign ‘My Local Hero’.

Schools who currently have a handwriting policy or are currently working on putting one in place are particularly encouraged to join the campaign but pupils at schools that do not have handwriting policies will benefit hugely too.

To really get pupils involved in the campaign and improving their handwriting there are three competitions for them to enter. These are: ‘Best Letter’, and ‘Best Envelope’ – both which must be centred around the ‘My Local Hero’ theme – and ‘Best Poster’. Each of these three competitions will be judged in three separate age categories: 5-7, 7-9, and 9-11.

There is also a special award of £400 worth of stationery (courtesy of Stabilo) to be won by the school or organisation that encourages the most participation from its children in the Write a Letter Week 2008 competitions.

The deadline to enter the competitions has been extended to 15 February 2008. Winners will be featured on the my child website during the week of the campaign.

Several celebrities are supporting the Write a Letter Week 2008 campaign by taking time out to write letters to their local heroes and agreeing to get grilled inthe Write a Letter Week 2008 Hot Seat in February. Write a Letter Week 2008 is sponsored by Stabilo, and Basildon Bond, and supported by the National Handwriting Association.
