New Minister Launches Learning at Work Day Debate 2010

The new Minister of State for Further Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills, John Hayes MP, launched the Learning at Work Day 2010 debate on 20 May in central London. Talking to an invited audience from the workplace learning and skills arena in the first week of his new post, the minister was keen to make clear that the new government not only understands that learning matters but also why it matters.
Recognising the importance of workplace skills, the Minister said:
‘An advanced economy requires advanced skills and our future chance to compete is indeed as an advanced high-skilled high-tech economy so it’s not just about people that are coming into learning, it’s not just the people who are deciding to learn for the efficacy of learning, it’s also about the necessity of that re-skilling and up-skilling process amongst the existing working population.’
The debate, which was organised by the Campaign for Learning to mark Learning at Work Day, included a panel of speakers from Pearson – Work Based Learning, learndirect, NIACE and the TUC.
