Burn on your way to earn!

Research by Costa Coffee has found that a typical London commuter takes 3,400 steps, walks more than two miles and uses up 246 calories each day. Over a five-day week, that is the equivalent to an hour’s jogging. For example, the most energetic commute from Bedford to St Pancras by rail, then King’s Cross to Oxford Circus by tube, burns 270 calories daily.

How many calories do you think you burn on your way to work? You can find out using a pedometer. When you enter your stride length, the pedometer will calculate roughly the number of calories you have burned. Although you can buy a pedometer from a number of places, food companies regularly run offers for free pedometers. For example, Kellogg’s All-Bran are running a Pedometer Programme. Visit the Kellogg's website for more information.

Run a competition in store to see which member of staff walks the furthest and burns the most calories on their way to work in a week. Create your own wallchart with staff names and journey details along one side; a column for steps made and calories burned each day; and then a scale of 0 – 2000 calories, shaded to represent the calories burned for each person during the week.
