L2L Newsletter 18
Hello and welcome to Issue 18 of the National Learning to Learn Action Research Project Newsletter.
It's been a busy few months for
everyone involved in the project, with the Year Two case studies from schools
and the first set from Colleges all now produced - please click on the 'L2L in
Schools' and 'L2L in FE' tabs to find out more. Topics teachers and learners
have looked at this time round have included the use of ICT to engage boys
in learning, the impact of various approaches, from target-centred to
collaborative, and what helps build resilience in learning.
Meanwhile at the Campaign we’ve
been undertaking a literature review in partnership with CfBT Education Trust,
looking at evidence on Learning to Learn practices in post-16 learning in the
UK and elsewhere in the world. (Rather depressingly, we found that although
there's a lot of good practice out there, there's a big gap in research
evidence on the topic.) The resulting pamphlet is being launched at an
event on Wednesday 20th January in London, for which John Hayes MP,
Shadow Minister (Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education) will be
joining us. The pamphlet will be
available after the launch from our website.
We haven’t been neglecting the
schools side of the project while doing this, however. We’re delighted
that the third in our practice-based Learning to Learn series of books with
Continuum Publishers has now been published. ‘Learning to learn for life 3: research
and practical ideas for secondary schools’ can be ordered from www.continuumbooks.com/
And
in our Learning to Learn SOS seminar series, we’ve taken seriously the HMI
statement that ‘the quality of teaching and
learning in the classroom is the driver of new Ofsted judgements’ and developed
a new seminar to show how Learning to Learn approaches can help schools
develop ‘outstanding’ teaching and learning. So if you want to know how to
deliver ‘the perfect Ofsted lesson’ (the provocative title of one of the
sessions) – or if you’re already delivering it daily and want to
share in the dialogue on good practice - come along to our seminar on 4th
March!
Best wishes
