Funding your FLF event

The Campaign for Learning encourages organisers to provide free Family Learning Festival activities so that all families can take part. However we do understand that costs need to be covered, which is why you may wish to look for funding to cover your event. Here’s some ideas to get you started:

  • The National Family Learning Network website has information on funding family learning activities including details of regional grants that are available: www.campaign-for-learning.org.uk/familylearningnetwork/fundingcookbook/index.asp

  • Some Local Authorities provide grants specifically for the Family Learning Festival. Your Adult and Community Learning Department should be able to give you more information.

  • Think about fundraising activities. The Institute of Fundraising’s website www.how2fundraise.org is a free online resource covering all aspects of fundraising. You could also try the fit4funding website www.fit4funding.org.uk

  • Consider sponsorship from local businesses. When approaching a local business think about the benefit to them and the fit with your event e.g. a local bakery may be interested in contributing to a cookery event. If a business can’t stretch to giving you financial assistance they may be able to offer in kind support such as ingredients or help with promoting the event. Speak to organisations like the local Rotary Club or University of the Third Age to see if they are willing to send volunteers to help out at the event.

  • Look at grant giving bodies including charitable trusts and foundations. The NCVO website www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/sfp/funding/ has lots of information and advice. You could also try the Guidestar website www.guidestar.org.uk, which has information on registered charities including ones that give out grants. Some grant giving bodies specifically give out funding for local activities.

Campaign for Learning welcomes Ofsted report on family learning

Family learning, where children and parents engage together in learning sessions, leads to improved communication, confidence and interpersonal skills in children according to a recent Ofsted report. Children also settled in better in class and had improved relationships with teachers and other children following the sessions. The report found that family learning can also lead to qualifications and employment for parents and give them the confidence and skills to help their child. The Chief Inspector recommends that family learning should be promoted as a core school activity. Read the full report.

We need you!

As we're all aware, the economic conditions mean that everyone's budgets are stretched. So, we need your help to share ideas with new and existing organisers on how to get the most out of Family Learning Festival events. We'd like you to upload video clips about how to organise an event, your top tips or ideas for activities. If you have footage of event itself that's even better - please get permission from attendees before filming and uploading anything to a public arena.

Once you have your video upload it to www.youtube.com and tag it with "Family Learning Festival" and drop us a line to let us know at flf@cflearning.org.uk See what we already have on our channel youtube.com/familylearningtelly Need some help on making a video.
