'The reforms I am announcing today are critical to implementing the Children’s Plan and delivering our vision of 21st Century schools. They will help us all take forward our ambitions to make this the best place in the world for children and young people to grow up, with excellent standards in all our schools.'

On 3 July 2008 Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families launched a consultation (http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/consultations/conDetails.cfm?consultationId=1564) into the role of schools in promoting the wellbeing of their pupils. It has always been accepted that Schools have an important role to play in their pupils' wellbeing and the consultation is to offer guidance on this and partnership working with Local Authorities and other partners.

The key issue is how to identify and assess the contribution of schools to the well-being of pupils, through specific indicators and through surveys of parents and pupils. How will schools assess their own contribution to well-being and how will Ofsted make judgement about the school’s contribution?

Chris Waterman will be joining us to examine the consultation paper and look at these issues. As usual there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and discuss the key points.
