The Big Society: On Paper and In Reality
Campaign for Learning
19 Buckingham Street
London
WC2N 6EF
19 July 2010
| 10.30am- 12.30pm £99 plus VAT The Big Society is one of the Coalition Government's big ideas. On paper, the proposals are encouraging: giving communities more power to shape the places where they live, encouraging people to take a more active role in their communities, transferring power from central to local government and making it easier for charities to contract with the state to deliver public services. However, how will this massive proposed cultural shift work in reality, and what will be the impact on the role of the third sector? This policy seminar will consider the issues, including: - Will the Government's Big Society proposals really improve the life chances of individuals - especially in neighbourhoods with poor health, low skills, high unemployment and inadequate housing? - Is the Big Society ultimately about investment in education? How can third sector organisations get behind the Big Society to help its chances of success? - How will the transfer of responsibilities work in practice? How can the third sector prepare to engage and ensure its indispensable role is recognised? - Building social capital needs to happen hand in hand with investment in education and training (from early years to adult skills), infrastructure, community assets and private sector business. Will public sector cuts undermine plans for a Big Society? Chris Waterman, Editor of Children's Services Weekly, will assess the implications of the Big Society and delegates will hear the perspectives of practitioners from the sector. Lisa Vernon Chief Executive of Derbyshire Learning and Development Consortium will be representing the National Learning Alliance and offering a Third Sector perspective on the issues. This seminar will be of interest to third sector organisations, social enterprises, community groups and local authority representatives. | ||||||||
