The recent announcement by Nick Clegg of the new Youth Contract is a direct policy response to the worsening figures on youth unemployment. This measure, which consists of a £1bn package of proposals, joins a number of other Coalition policies that aim to increase participation in education, employment and training amongst 16-24 year olds.

This seminar will assess these policies and options for participation, which include the promotion of apprenticeships, the raising of the participation age, the provision of wage subsidies, work experience and full time education. It will evaluate the likely effectiveness of the government’s current strategies to address youth unemployment and consider alternative and additional measures that may be taken.

Mark Corney, Policy Adviser to the Campaign for Learning will give an overview and assessment of current policy and Chris Hodson, Director of the Work Alliance will respond. The session will be chaired by Tricia Hartley, Chief Executive of the Campaign for Learning, and there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

The Campaign for Learning’s policy seminars are held under the Chatham House Rule to facilitate open debate and discussion.
