General Learning Resources
'Learning is a process of active engagement with experience. It is what people do when they want to make sense of the world. It may involved an increase in skills, knowledge or understanding, a deepening of values of the capacity to reflect. Effective learning will lead to change, development and a desire to learn more.' The Campaign for Learning’s definition of learning.
About the Campaign for Learning:
We are all born eager to learn. But for too many of us, our enthusiasm for learning wanes as we get older. To create a learning society, we must remain keen learners throughout our lives. The Campaign for Learning believes this can only happen when learning is understood, valued and accessible to everyone, as of right. The evidence shows that lifelong learners can enjoy greater health, happiness and success. They also contribute more to society. Wider participation in learning from people of all ages will have a positive effect on the nation's competitiveness, well-being and harmony.
The Campaign for Learning is an independent national charity working for an inclusive society in which learning is understood, valued and accessible to everyone as of right. The Campaign aims stimulate learning that will sustain people for life. The Campaign works to build motivation, create opportunities and provide support for learning in families and communities, workplaces and schools. Key elements of the Campaign’s work are national promotion campaigns, project partnerships, policy and advocacy, publications, events, research and award schemes.

Campaign for Learning projects and research:
First Steps into Learning is a report from the Campaign for Learning based on research carried out with groups of individuals most thought to be exclude from learning to explore their attitudes and motivations to learning and the key messages and divers that would help them back into learning.
A Numeracy Scoping Study was carried out between October 2004 and March 2005 by the Campaign for Learning for the Skills for Life Strategy Unit to assess current numeracy levels and issues within the following six sectors: Health and Social Care, Food and Drink, Passenger Transport, Facilities Management, Retail and Hospitality. The study reviews literature and practice relating to numeracy levels in the UK workforce and examines the business impact of numeracy issues within each of the identified sectors, based on available research and on intelligence gathered from interviews with relevant Sector Skills Council representatives, employers, Union Learning Representatives, providers of workplace numeracy courses and other experts.
The Level Two Trial Project was run by the Campaign for Learning for the Learning and Skills Council. Commissioned by the Widening Participation team at the Learning and Skills Council, the Campaign for Learning has been supporting the Level Two Trial Pilots in the North East and South East regions. This project has been focussing on the potential of Sure Starts and Children Centres to promote opportunities to those who might not otherwise hear about them. Working with the local LSCs in both regions the Campaign organised six seminars to bring Sure Start and Children's Centre staff together with IAG providers, LSC staff and other key agencies to obtain feedback on the Trial from a Sure Start/Children's Centre perspective.
