Learning at Work Day Stories from 2007
Igniting a passion for learning!
Over 350 people attended the Fire Brigade Union's event at Darnell Road Fire Station, Sheffield, covering the day and evening shift and open to the local community. The Move On mini-tests, on-site language courses and career assessments had such an impact that 2 new ULR's were recruited and 80 people registered for new learning opportunities as a direct result.
All aboard the learning journey
For the third year in a row, Academee Learning Solutions, took part in the Day, with all 60 employees involved in pottery, treasure hunting, orienteering and sailing! As well as a chance to learn new skills, the Day brought together the geographically dispersed workforce making it a resounding success.
Teacher training with a difference
At Dorothy Stringer School, Brighton, teachers signed up for after school tasters themselves. Run by school colleagues taster included Spanish for Beginners, Singing and Rhyming, Pottery, Painting, Life Drawing, Jewellery Making, Exploring the Natural World and a dance session called In the Mix.
On the learning beat
Durham Constabulary offered staff a mixture of both leisure and work-related activities for their 5th Learning at Work Day event. The programme included golf tips, policing in Iraq, core stability, mountain biking, salsa dancing, fiction crime writing, Tai Chi, natural healing, financial planning, foreign language, tennis, dog training and more.
Sparking an interest in learning through hobby swaps
Employees took the opportunity to showcase their own hobbies and interests for Learning at Work Day at National Grid Metering, leading to several signing up for further learning. The inspiring presentations from staff included the American Civil War, how to play the guitar, learning Arabic and jewellery making.
